Creativity and Sensitivity in Supporting Child Bereavement

When Design Fox Collective was invited to support a seasonal social media campaign for a child bereavement charity, we recognised immediately that this was about much more than festive visuals or simple messages.

It was a chance to bring kindness and true understanding to children and families experiencing profound loss—and to honour the volunteers and support workers who dedicate their time and hearts to this difficult journey.

The campaign’s goal was to gently acknowledge the complex grief children face, and to sincerely thank those who offer their care and compassion—the counsellors, volunteers, and carers whose presence often goes unnoticed but is invaluable.

We began by listening deeply—not just to the brief but to the emotional realities behind it. Grief, especially for children, is often quiet, shifting, and deeply personal. We reflected on how design could genuinely validate these feelings and offer comfort without overshadowing the rawness of loss. How could we honour both the courage of those grieving and the dedication of those supporting them?

From this understanding, our creative direction took shape. We chose soft, thoughtful imagery—quiet winter landscapes and the subtle inclusion of a small bird. This bird isn’t just a decorative element; it carries profound symbolism of hope, remembrance, and friendship. Birds evoke a sense of calm and connection, gently reminding us that even amid loss, healing and ongoing bonds are possible. This imagery offers quiet strength and comfort without overwhelming.

Our messaging was deliberate—few words, chosen with care to offer warmth and gratitude while respecting the complexity of grief.

A charity that inspired us deeply is SimonSays, which supports bereaved children and young people. Their work shaped our approach and reminded us why sensitive storytelling matters. Grief asks us to face difficult emotions, and it can be tempting to look away. Yet, the resilience of bereaved children and the generosity of their supporters calls us to respond with open hearts. For us, creativity here is about meeting people with respect, empathy, and genuine care.
